Vexillum - UnumTuesday, January 13, 2015 - Posted by Limb Music, in Albums, Vidéo
Pisa is primarily known for its leaning tower and less for great heavy metal. But the town has produced a band whose last album, "The Bivouac", shook the metal world awake and established their very own style. However, to describe their style simply as "Heavy Metal" is inappropriate, for the Italians have created a niche of their own. Dashing Euro-Power Metal interwoven with Celtic-/ Nordic-/Folk ingredients is not exactly a description one comes across often in the worldwide metal press.
On their albums, VEXILLUM, named after the individual legionary banner-standards used by legions of the Roman army on the march, realize their vision of hymnic Heavy Metal with an unmistakable stamp of their own. This vision and the uniqueness of this quintet is continued on their newest, epic long-player "Unum". Staying true to their style, they have succeeded in focusing it and bringing out yet more of its strengths. The concentrated work on their own identity has already borne fruit and their fans are looking forward to the new album. There are no unpleasant surprises - VEXILLUM is delivering what is expected of them - and more. Founded in Pisa in 2004 by Michael Gasparri under the name of "SHADOW VEXILLUM", the formation was followed by several line-up changes before they became a stable group at the end of 2005. In that year the band recorded their first demo CD entitled "Tales" which already showed a musical uniqueness: the combination of Celtic-Nordic-Folk influences with fast, melodic Power Metal elements. The band underlined the sound optically at live shows by appearing on stage in Scottish kilts - and still do so today. In 2006 Dario Vallesi joined SHADOW VEXILLUM as its new singer and still puts his own unique stamp of style and sound on the band. In the same year they began work on their first EP, "Neverending Quest". Parallel to the recordings, the Italians changed the band's name from SHADOW VEXILLUM to VEXILLUM, once again changing some band members in order to form the best possible conditions for the planned EP. Musical support was gained by the two VISION DIVINE musicians Alessio Lucatti and Federico Puleri, who made guest appearances on "Rising From The Ruins". The EP was released in 2007 and received very positive reviews from all over the world. Their first important shows were played with bands such as ELDRITCH. In 2010 the band began work on their first album, which kept them busy all through the summer, in order to have it finished before the end of the year. "The Wandering Notes" on the Italian label My Graveyard Productions at the beginning of 2011. The lads' style had made enormous progress and the international press pricked up their ears in interest. Positive reviews confirmed that VEXILLUM had done everything right. The album gave the band the chance to work with friends from other bands, such as Fabio Lione (VISION DIVINE, RHAPSODY OF FIRE) and Alessio Lucatti (VISION DIVINE). The excellent reaction of the press led to VEXILLUM going on tour through Europe with RHAPSODY OF FIRE in February 2011. After the tour, they needed to find a new drummer at short notice and it was in the new formation that the quintet sat down to write the songs for the successor to "The Wandering Notes". From May until July 2012 the highly motivated Italians worked on "The Bivouac", which appeared in the stores on the Limb Music label in September of that year. The band stayed on track musically and thematically and so one once again met up with many of the familiar figures in the stories. They fixed their style in concrete and refined it in order to avoid being mistaken for any other band. "The Bivouac" was also welcomed into the metal scene. Their style can be compared to bands such as RHAPSODY OF FIRE, LABYRINTH and HEIMDALL, whose influences can be heard, without, however, being simply copied. The album, recorded in the "Wanna Rock" studios, is melodic but has an edgy sound and Darrio Vallesi's voice impresses the listener more and more with his unmistakeable style. An extensive tour comprising 26 shows with LUCA TURILLI'S RHAPSODY, FREEDOM CALL and ORDEN OGAN at the end of 2012 won VEXILLUM many new fans. In May 2013 they went on tour again, this time with FREEDOM CALL on the "Ages Of Light" Tour, which was also extremely successful. Hardly catching their breath, they immediately began work on "Unum", their third album. The band set their sights a lot higher for this work. "Unum" is a concept album, on which singer Dario Vallesi holds the sceptre as main character. He is supported in his singing role by internationally known vocalists Hansi Kürsch of BLIND GUARDIAN, Chris Bay (FREEDOM CALL), Maxi Nil (JADED STAR, ex-VISIONS OF ATLANTIS) as well as Mark Boals (MALMSTEEN, IRON MASK, RING OF FIRE), who sing the parts of other characters in the story. "Unum" is sure to establish VEXILLUM firmly on the heavy metal map of Europe. "Unum" stands for a strong mixture of Power and Folk, marked by superfast guitars, great choruses, bagpipes and lots of small finesses, which the listener will notice and register. The cleverly thought-out concept is carried by the impressive vocals of Dario Vallesi and the wall of the dual guitars. The primarily up-tempo tracks often start of with fragments of sounds which convey the mood for the story and which take the listener along on a classical journey. The international guests mentioned above, such as Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN) or Mark Boals (MALMSTEEN, IRON MASK, RING OF FIRE), superbly fill out the songs without forcing themselves into the foreground. The songs, all highly melodic, do not sound overly polished, but the punchy sound blows your socks off. The furiously driving riff attacks harmonize perfectly with the hymnic melodies, which form the axis of the album. This is best heard on "The Sentenced-Fire And Blood", on which Hansi Kürsch places the stamp of his unmistakeable voice. Some of the tracks remind one of HAMMERFALL and ALESTORM without them being shameless copies. Rather, they mix together various influences in order to create songs of their own style. "The Way Back - The Clash Within” is one such power hymn, with a very unique, unforgettable chorus, whilst their own interpretation of the SLADE Hit, "Run Run Away" is sure to cause discussions although this great, intensive version will finally win through. "Unum" has loads of highlights thanks to the many well played musical finesses which manifest themselves in the overall sound, as the listener will realize. All this makes VEXILLUM to the top band of the Italian scene, with an unmistakeable style of great power metal and folk elements. Line Up

While Heaven Wept - Suspended At AphelionSunday, January 11, 2015 - Posted by Nuclear Blast, in Albums, Vidéo
WHILE HEAVEN WEPT has existed in various forms since 1989 (though the actual moniker wasn’t settled upon until 1991) and co-founding guitarist/composer Tom Phillips has been the one constant for the past 25 years. Since the beginning, there has been a wide range of influences, transcending forms, styles, and genres…running the gamut from early FATES WARNING and QUEENSRYCHE to CORONER and HOLY TERROR, from KITARO and Klaus Schulze to BLACK SABBATH, RUSH, and KING CRIMSON…all the while incorporating elements from 4AD artists/shoegazers (DEAD CAN DANCE, THIS MORTAL COIL, etc.) and a decidedly neo-romantic structure inspired by the likes of Chopin, Beethoven, Faure - as well as some late 20th Century composers such as Gorecki, Pärt, and Kilar.
Despite countless line-up changes in the early years, the core of the band, featuring bassist Jim Hunter, guitarist Scott Loose, and his sister Michelle on keyboards essentially came together in 1998 and has remained intact ever since, though her husband and BRAVE bandmate Trevor came on board in 2004 after a series of drummers came and went. The current line-up really solidified in 2008 with the addition of former ALTURA vocalist Rain Irving, who first appeared on the landmark »Vast Oceans Lachrymose« album, which ultimately has come to define the full realization of the “WHW sound” without betraying the musical framework established over the decades prior. Shortly after the release of »Vast Oceans Lachrymose« the line-up was further expanded when one-time surrogate keyboard player Jason Lingle (also ex- ALTURA) was brought in to enhance the orchestral and harmonic aspects of the material. After more than 20 years operating as an independent artist, self-financing every release and tour, the band signed their first and only contract with the world’s largest Metal label Nuclear Blast Records in 2010 to combat the exorbitant prices for their rare catalog of releases and to insure their music was widely available from then on. Following the release of the »Fear Of Infinity« album in 2011, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT toured throughout Europe and the United States, performed at several high-profile festivals including Germany’s Hammer Of Doom, Greece’s Up The Hammers, ProgPower USA, as well as a series of European Metalfests promoted by the band’s booking agency Rock The Nation. Over the past 25 years, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT has shared the stage with everyone from legends such as SAINT VITUS, TROUBLE, PENTAGRAM, FORBIDDEN, and SANCTUARY to equally legendary contemporaries like PRIMORDIAL, SOLSTICE (UK), MORUNING BELOVETH, PENANCE, and REVELATION onto new hopes like ORODRUIN, ARGUS, THE GATES OF SLUMBER, ALCEST, CORMORANT, and VEKTOR…not to mention sharing festival stages with the likes of the “larger than life” ARCH ENEMY, SABATON, AMON AMARTH, CRADLE OF FILTH, etc. 2014 marks a quarter of a century of WHILE HEAVEN WEPT and the band is commemorating this with the release of »Suspended At Aphelion« - a single 40 minute epic, that is easily the pinnacle of their recorded output so far combining the sweeping melodies, dense orchestration, glorious bombast, and heartfelt sincerity they’ve always been known for in their most “complete” expression to date. »Suspended At Aphelion« sees the band continuing to redefine themselves defying musical labels and boundaries with their most ambitious, truly progressive release to date. Apart from the panoramic scope of the material, the involvement of prestigious guests including FATES WARNING co-founder Victor Arduini, FATES WARNING alumnus and WARLORD drummer Mark Zonder, esteemed classical guitarist Christopher Ladd, and cellist Mark Shuping further pushes the album unto another level altogether. 25 years on, we find WHILE HEAVEN WEPT at the very peak of their creativity and profoundly emotional expression, not content to revel in past glories or rest upon laurels, it seems that this is only the beginning… Line Up:

Melechesh - »Enki«Sunday, January 11, 2015 - Posted by Nuclear Blast, in Albums, Vidéo
Pioneers of Sumerian thrashing black metal, MELECHESH, recently released the lyric video for the song 'Multiple Truths'.
This song is par of ZanZanA WebRadiO playlist. Founded by a young guitarist who adopted the alias “Ashmedi “ in the city of Jerusalem back in 1993, MELECHESH has always been a visionary band that invented a genre of its own. Melting raw black metal with Mediterranean drum patterns and guitar scales was the idea and resulted in a phenomenal demo (»As Jerusalem Burns«) and a 7” EP (»The Siege Of Lachish«) which gained the band a certain popularity in the first place. However the first album »As Jerusalem Burns… Al’Intisar« was the one to put Jerusalem and Bethlehem on the map of extreme metal, making MELECHESH the first non-Israeli metal band from the Middle East to get signed – and the first ever metal band out of Jerusalem with a record deal. Ashmedi and the rest of the members eventually moved to Europe and USA in 1998 due to several demographic, artistic and socio-political reasons. The following year saw the recruitment of Proscriptor (from ABSU) on drums and a three-album deal with Osmose Productions. The new album, »Djinn«, was characterized by its subtle mix between extreme metal and Middle Eastern sounds, taking the bands brand to another level. Although the band members being located all over the world, in 2003 determined Ashmedi took the next step. »Sphynx« (featuring an epic cover illustrated by Ron Woodall from George Lucas’ Industrial Light and Magic) brought the band a whole lot thrashier sound without denying their black metal roots. The album was greeted as “Sumerian thrashing black metal”, ranking as one of the top 10 metal releases of 2003 and one of the best 100 albums of the decade by Terrorizer magazine. The following years also brought MELECHESH back to the live scene, playing festivals in Europe and North America. With Proscriptor living in the United States however, MELECHESH needed to recruit session drummer Xul who in 2005 would eventually replace Proscriptor once the band entered the writing phase for their fourth album, »Emissaries«. The effort would be delayed by almost a year because of a mixing problem. »Emissaries« was finally released on 30 October 2006 (European/world date) and January 23, 2007 in the United States. According to their label this was the most expensive album for Osmose Productions after IMMORTAL’s »Blizzard Beasts«. The bands fourth record got greeted as proof of MELECHESH’s determined character. According to Zero Tolerance magazine the album “stands majestically tall as a supreme victory for a band prepared to challenge the limits of what they can achieve” and USA’s Spin Magazine ambitiously praised the band as “setting the bar for metal in 2007”. The album was album of the month in several magazines and/or album of the year in 2006 and 2007. »Emissaries« also confirmed that MELECHESH’s music was made to be played live, and so the band toured Europe in 2008 and several shows in North America and played numerous international festivals (Party San, Hellfest, Kaltenbach, Hole in the Sky, Maryland Deathfest….) and took them all the way to distant and unlikely places such as Dubai and Armenia. The same year, MELECHESH took another step and signed with Nuclear Blast Records. Shortly before the new album went to the planning stages, Ashmedi was asked to write a monthly column about his life and thoughts. Still going his interesting autobiographical stories are being published worldwide by several big print & online publications which gained the band even more interest from all over the world and pushed the name already in advance of the album. This multidimensional aspect is characteristic for a band that constantly seeks to explore the many facets of the subgenre it forged within the extreme metal scene. Preferring quality to quantity, musical honesty over trend, MELECHESH is answering a call. April 2010 the band was set to to record their fifth album »The Epigenesis«. Against all trends the band went eastwards rather than going for the norm. »The Epigenesis« was recorded in Istanbul’s newly built first class Babajim Studio. Responses to »The Epigenesis« were outstanding with several cover stories and again album considered album of the Month or of the year. Post »The Epigenesis« release MELECHESH set out to tour like the nomadic souls they are. Aside from appearing in numerous festivals, the band did 8 tours of which 3 were North American tours. This spread the MELECHESH molecule even further and to more crowds around the globe. 2012 Ashmedi was the subject of an episode for the Canadian reality TV show “The Cool Guy Files” which explores interesting jobs of various people from pro snowboarding to musicians ...the show was syndicated in several countries in Asia and Europe. That same year Scorpios joined the band as the bass player and backing vocalist. In the summer 2013 Ashmedi felt the need to revamp the band’s line up for the sake of musical longevity and prevent stagnation. Drummer Xul was asked to leave on amicable terms and the writing Sessions started. Long-time friend and member Moloch has been a passive member due to his personal circumstances and commitments so it was agreed he should step back and give his position to someone more involved. During that period as in any organization or entity the shake-up was, wrong people were approaching the band to join some had alterior motives others just unprepared, some so eager to be announced in the band despite lack of commitment, this caused some delays in the writing process. Through trial and error Ashmedi managed to filter such outside noise, distractions and counter-productive and focus on writing one of the best albums ever written by MELECHESH. Such aspects added that extra angry edge to the writing process. Soon after, Moloch rejoined the band strictly as a recording member but not a touring one, which basically was the situation since 2011. Summer 2014 MELECHESH set off to record their 6th album entitled »Enki«. Almost all of the music including the drums composing and arrangements and lyrics was again written and produced by Ashmedi. MELECHESH spent one month in their rehearsal room in Hinzweile , Germany rehearsing the Material and then entered the studios in Athens, Greece for the recording sessions of »Enki«. The band wanted a Mediterranean place to record to capture the essence of the band’s origins. The drums were recorded at Devasoundz Studios engineered by Fotis Benardo, while the rest was recorded at Grindhouse Studio by George Bokos. The process was intense and long, 2.5 months later the band returned to their new HQ in Germany and did additional recordings at Scoprios’ Oneironaut Studio, Moloch flew in to the studio to record his parts including the Levantine traditional instrument- Bouzque. The album was then mixed and Mastered at Black Lounge Studio in Sweden by Jonas Kjellgren. Drums were initially recorded a session drummer, but had to be rerecorded later by none other than long-time friend and member of the MELECHESH society Lord Curse, the band’s first drummer who appears on MELECHESH first Demos , Album and Ep. »Enki« features 12 string electric guitars aside from the 6 string played on the entire album, for a heavier and subtly richer harmonic sound. The band also tuned their instruments to the pitch perfect 432 Hz frequency rather than the standardized 440 Hz one for a deeper sonic experience within the human psyche and in accordance to vibrations of the universe. »Enki« also features esteemed friends of the MELECHESH society guest vocalists Max Cavalera and Sakis Tolis as well as guest lead by Rob Caggiano. With so many nationalities in the band MELECHESH and constant labelling, the band, MELECHESH became more comfortable as being labelled MELECHESH from planet earth or just Jerusalem (as the source of origin) without adhering to many man-made virtual borders. To the band this is metaphorical rebellion. With this deep and personal album filled with metaphor, spiritual, and philosophical references, and further development of their own Mesopotamian Metal, MELECHESH are yet again ready to spread their sonic magic, enlightened revelations and art to the cosmos. This is Sonic Magick Tracklist:
